Aerobiosys Innovations: A Healthtech Startup That Aims to Save Lives with Affordable Ventilators

Aerobiosys Innovations is a healthtech startup that has been incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad Center for Healthcare Entrepreneurship (CfHE). The company was co-founded in 2019 by two young Biodesign Innovation fellows, Dr. Rajesh Thangavel and Dr. Cyril Antony, who are passionate about developing affordable and accessible medical devices for respiratory care.

The startup’s flagship product is Jeevan Lite, a low-cost, portable, emergency-use ventilator that can perform both invasive and non-invasive ventilation for adult and pediatric patients. Jeevan Lite is also Internet of Things-enabled and can be operated through a phone app. It can also run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for five hours without power supply, making it suitable for remote areas.

The design and features of Jeevan Lite are in compliance with the requirements mentioned by the Ministry of Health, Director General Life Sciences, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Chairman Technical Committee and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The startup’s vision is to innovate and provide medical technology products, services, and solutions that make healthcare affordable and accessible to everyone across the globe. The startup’s mission is to solve the unmet healthcare needs of patients with respiratory illness by building innovative products that enable them to access quality healthcare at an affordable cost.

According to the World Health Organization, chronic respiratory diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for 4 million deaths annually. India has a disproportionately high burden of these diseases, with an estimated 55 million people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 37 million from asthma.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed the acute shortage of ventilators in India, as well as the high cost and complexity of existing devices. Aerobiosys Innovations aims to address this gap by offering a low-cost, easy-to-use, and reliable ventilator that can save lives in critical situations.

The startup has received several accolades and recognition for its innovation, such as the Best Innovation Award from the Public Health Innovation Challenge (PHIC) Hyderabad, the Top 10 Innovators Award from the India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP) 2.0, and the appreciation from the Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Aerobiosys Innovations is currently working on scaling up its production and distribution of Jeevan Lite, as well as developing other products such as Duo Vent, a double lung ventilator, and J Fit, a smart SpO2 tracker. The startup hopes to make a positive impact on the healthcare sector and improve the lives of millions of people with respiratory problems.
